Blue Energy (New Energy Industry) Plan

New Capital for Global Energy,
Jeollanam-do

Era of energy revolution

Energy innovation and growth base
with abundant new and renewable energy supply

The Situation and Potential of Jeollanam-do

Highest in Korea

  • One of the top generators of renewable energy in Korea(12,347GHW)
  • Potential offshore wind power capacity(12.4GW)

2nd in Korea

  • by-product hydrogen(544tons per year)

Establishment of “Energy Valley,” an innovation ecosystem underway by building companies and laboratories associated with the New Energy Industry in and around Bitgaram Innovation City (since Jan 2015)

Development plans announced for the base for “Next Generation New Energy Industry,” one of the 8 leading innovative growth industries designated by the state (Jan 2019 MOTIE)

With the foundation of KEPCO Tech (Jan 2019), creating the basis for source technology R&D and foundation for human resources to lead the next generation global energy market

Key Agendas

Develop KEPCO Tech into a competitive tech university with a special focus on energy and lead the global new energy industry Successfully open KEPCO Tech by March 2022

Build an “Energy Valley,” or Clusters of Innovation much like the “Silicon Valley” of the United States; Designate the Energy Valley as InnoTown (MIST), Energy Industry Convergence Complex (MOTIE), and Regulation-free Zone (MSS) Create international unicorn companies that create new and innovative technology such as M/G, DC electrical current, PCS, etc.

Gather a Collector Bus for the development of 8.2GW large-scale offshore wind generation plants and transmission networks to back the “Renewable Energy 3020” Plan Create a support harbor and hinterland for the offshore wind energy at Shinhangman, Mokpo

Expected Output

Open a new university specialized in energy to lead the energy research in Korea and cultivate key global human resources. ※ 25 percent of those who had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics were doing research associated with synchrotron radiation

Create an innovation ecosystem with sustainable growth for companies in the Energy Valley by providing support for R&D of new technology, commercialization of technology, and entering the global market ※ Cultivate global unicorn companies and create 1,000 new energy-related companies and 20,000 energy-related jobs by 2022

Prompt private investments by creating large-scale offshore wind generators to enter the market for offshore wind energy and create the basis for “Jeollanamdo-based jobs” ※ 45.4 trillion KRW of private investments and 117,506 new jobs including 4,006 permanent jobs
